Marie talking about the Generation Project

Here's another interview by CAUSECAST. Marie talks about the Generation Project and a little about the reason she started posting videos on YouTube.

I was just playing a little show at Hotel Cafe. It was just another show. One of the hundred other shows that I did in L.A. and some A&R people happened to show up to that show and I got signed. It was just simple and quick and that was that.

And then I went and made an album, handed it to the label and the label was like :" Cool. We're gonna put that to the side for now because we've got Hilary Diff and Jesse McCartney." and all these Disney kids and it's really easy to put out those albums. They already have a built-in audience. They don't really have to think about how to promote and market. I think for me they were like: "What do we do? What do we do with you? No one knows you." So that's why I started posting on YouTube hoping that that was going to create some kind of a buzz.

I often get asked to do videos for kids in hospitals...I guess who watch my YouTube videos, to do a specific one where I have them sing along with me. Music's really comforting and it's therapeutic and I feel like that's a way that I could help them.

I feel very passionate about any causes that have to do with children. The Generation Project was started by my best friend and it allows anyone to donate or give back to their communities, mostly children, in a way that they want to. Whether you're a 12 year old kid and you just got big allowance and you wanna donate your favourite book to a child somewhere else who doesn't have the opportunity to buy that book.
You can do it through the Generation Project. Or you could be a millionaire and want to donate a school.

It's about smaller gifts. So it allows regular people to donate to children in need in a way that they're passionate about. It doesn't feel like it's enough just to donate money. You know, you feel like you personally want to do something to help them out. So for me, that would be music. Music is the universal language so it allows people of any different nationality or any group to come together. What makes music so incredible is that it says what words can't say.
